In a shocking turn of events, the 62-year-old white man responsible for attempting to run down six Black men at the site of the historic Rosewood massacre has been sentenced to just one year in prison. David Allen Emanuel appeared solemn as the sentence was delivered by federal Judge Allen Winsor on six counts of hate crimes. The incident occurred as Historian Marvin Dunn and his son, along with four other Black men, were surveying Dunn’s Rosewood property to build a memorial for the horrific massacre. The judge’s decision called for 12 months plus one day in federal prison for each of the six charges, with the sentences running concurrently. This light sentencing stunned many, as the Justice Department had sought a much harsher punishment of five to six years behind bars.
